Joint innovation with a strategically oriented manufacturer.

A mobile app designed to improve internal processes.
Kämpfe Elektronik specialises in assembling PCBs - regardless of whether it is a prototype PCB with one component or 1,000 PCBs with 1,000 components. Depending on the order, the 50 employees work manually or on large SMD production lines.
Good preparation, storage and organisation of the components is crucial, and in order to make internal processes more efficient, the company decided to develop an internal mobile app that connects to its systems and links the various departments. Equipped with a mobile device, each employee will be able to scan all materials to retrieve information, facilitate correct reordering and storage and support internal communication.
brightside Studio, as part of the product team, advised the company on the user experience and worked on the design of the user experience - in close collaboration with the product manager, the developers and the end users: the employees.

Understanding the context of use
To understand the requirements and the context of use, we visited the Kämpfe Elektronik factory and observed and interviewed employees at work. We realised that the users of the future app would be heterogeneous, both in terms of age and experience with digital media.
The app should act as a tool, providing employees with important information about the material or product at the right time, helping them to replenish material or sort new goods correctly. An important requirement is that the user interface is very simple and that users can't really 'get it wrong'.

Testing ideas and the app development process
By observing the users and their current workflows, we wanted to understand all the scenarios in which the application would be used. After a few days of ideation and prototyping, we tested these with the user group and repeated this process several times.
Once we had validated our ideas, we worked with external developers and KE's management team to develop a fully usable product for staff that met the needs of stakeholders and end users. Finally, a full UI kit was developed to ensure consistency of the user interface as the application scaled.

Added value for 50 employees and the entire business
By combining our UX expertise with the developer's technical know-how, we have created a clear and easy-to-use app for employees with different levels of experience working with digital products. The mobile device is equipped with a scanner that feeds the app with data from various databases. Key features include material orientation — a guide to the use of machines and components — and the ability to check the status of a project.
As processes and machines are optimized, the needs of users will also change over time. We will continue to support Kämpfe Elektronik and his team in further developing the application.
